Americans - who are you?

Americans - who are you?

One of the most interesting blogs I came across this week was an invitation by a blogger for people outside of the USA to tell us who they think Americans are, culture, politics, moral standing etc.

As American culture has been adopted all over the world, it's music, food, movies and spirit, the responses were as you might expect, varied and fascinating:

Fat, ignorant, poor dressers, shallow, loud, rude, narrow minded. Warm, generous, powerful, kind and passionate, are just some of the opinions shared about Americans. (But don't worry, we'll be doing Brits next!)

With many controversial military operations having been waged around the world in recent years by the USA, I expected to read some vitriolic opinions by many bloggers, and in many cases that was true. However, those who had actually travelled within the USA, or had met Americans abroad, had a far more positive appreciation of Americans and their culture.

Quote:
"originally I had two views of Americans: slack-jawed southern,
right wing, gun nut yokels, or loud, abrasive, stupid gun nuts. I knew of course that not all Americans were like this"

So enough of the stereotypes! Come on, tell us who Americans really are?

I'm an american and I can easily tell you who we are. We are well educated and a caring group of People, The stereotype is only half true. We are also a nation that is slowly becoming the exact opposite of what we originally were. America. The United States, is supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave. But there are certain pockets of Americans, yes that would be the Hillbillies, the religious vigilantes, the gunslingers and the war mongers, that would love nothing more than to turn America into a fascist, All radical Christian... theres not even a word for it. In short, Many Americans are disgusted with their own country and especially their president.

Americans have become intoxicated with laziness and wealth. We once were a proud nation, but a willful ignorance has become our shame! Are we intellectually lazy subscribing to the lowest common denominator of thought?

The nation is spiraling down in ignorance as we stop reading and spend most of our time in front of the television. Double think has become reality and many are afraid to confront what really lies ahead. Tyranny! History repeats itself.

This is what is bad about usa foreign policy but the fact that such a film was made shows what is good about America. America IS a democracy, and it is the capacity for self criticism that is the greatest glory of a democratic system. eternal vigilance is the price of freedom, as long as americans are vigilant, they will be able to guarantee not only their own freedom but that of the rest of the world. MANY THINGS ARE DONE IN THE NAME OF AMERICANS WITHOUT THEM KNOWING IT. But it is thanks to the spirit of freedom that Americans can fight this.
