More gun control, or should we all be armed?

Do we really need more gun control, or should we all be armed?
According to Amnesty, more than 1000 people worldwide are dying from gun violence every day.
We all know from the only US government statistics we have that in 2004 a total of 11,624 people were shot dead or murdered in the USA. In the same year another 16,750 people shot themselves to death with firearms! There are now 200m guns in America, and it’s legal in 40 states to carry a handgun!
But is an increase in gun control really the answer? Can criminals really be controlled in this way? Won’t we just be disarming the good guys? Don’t we have a right to defend ourselves with guns?
With the seemingly endless tragic shootings of innocent people on a regular basis in our society, surely there are some simple common steps we can take to prevent dangerous people from acquiring weapons?
So, more control, or is there another way?
